Apple TouchID, the fingerprint scanner for the iPhone5S, is reported to have been hacked. Within hours of the iPhone5S being launched there was a website setup to see who would be the first person to be able to hack it and show proof. The website, isTouchIDhackedyet.com, wanted to know if it was possible.
A group called the “Chaos Computer Club” in Germany has now come out and claimed that they have indeed managed it. This is how they reportedly did it:
A fingerprint of the phone user, photographed from a glass surface, was enough to create a fake finger that could unlock an iPhone 5s secured with TouchID.
The video, documenting the experience can be seen below:
Apple maintains that TouchID is secure but on this evidence, and past experience with every day biometrics, it looks unlikely.
What’s your thoughts on this? Are you surprised it’s been hacked? How can be keep our phones secure? Let us know.
